Decker was moving to Georgia by the time she reached the age of 15. In her early teens and the Big Yellow Dog Records representative saw her work and began to sell her tracks to labels and musicians. Decker's songs were heard by Mercury Records president David Massey and then passed to L.A. Reid of Island/Def Jam group affiliated label group L.A. Reid was able to sign Decker to a contract. Jessie James, her moniker for the album she released under that name at the end of August, 2009 was self-titled. Jessie James, which featured Wanted as a top single within the Top 40 Singles Charts was moderately well-received. Decker has always been a Country performer, but the album was made and promoted it was designed with the attention of pop fans in mind. Decker battled with the label to gain more control of her music following two previous singles did not succeed. The album she released next, Boys in the Summer, was more country oriented. Decker launched her sophomore album under two names: Sweet American Dreams or Daughter of a Gypsy. Mercury shelved it after the first three singles did poorly in the country charts. Decker then was let go from the contract.
